Nikola II was born in Paris on the 24 July 1944, son of King Michael I of Montenegro and Geneviève née Prigent. He qualified as an architect and was founder of the Cetinje Biennale of Contemporary Art.
On the 27 November 1976 he married the late Francine Navarro (27 January 1950 – 6 August 2008) in Trebeurden on the Côtes-du-Nord in France.
His Royal Highness is Grand Master of the Order of Petrović-Njegoš, the Order of Saint Peter of Cetinje and the Order of Prince Danilo I as well as holding many other foreign Orders and decorations, including:
· Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta
· Supreme Order of the Holy Annunciation
· Grand Cross Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus
· Grand Cross Order of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Viçosa
· Grand Cross of the Royal Order of the King Francis I of Naples
· Golden Medal of Honour of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George
· Grand Cross of Merit of the Italian Red Cross
